Individual grants of £5,000 to £10,000 are likely to be the norm, rising to £25,000 in exceptional cases. Projects will need to demonstrate that they:

• raise the profile of languages and raise awareness of the advantages of language learning;
  
• motivate and inspire groups that are currently under-represented in language learning;
  
• increase support for language learners beyond the mainstream statutory provision, thus increasing and widening participation;
  
• improve access to language learning by exploring ways of overcoming practical barriers.

We are very interested in projects:

• where organisations join forces to achieve the above objectives;
  
• which involve employers;
  
• where the Nuffield contribution is to be matched by funds from other sources;
  
• which include partners from outside the UK.

Projects must also be innovative, practical, generalisable and reflective.
