Leeds Metropolitan University is launching a search on Wednesday 10 September to find professionals and business people to raise awareness of languages in the workplace.
(August 12 2003) There is widespread incredulity and dismay at the proposed closure of the Department of East Asian Studies at Durham University. Many have protested to the Vice Chancellor.
(July 2 2003) Dr Lid King, currently Director of CILT, has been appointed National Director for Languages. His appointment was announced by Baroness Ashton, who also gave details of the Pathfinder projects to develop language learning in primary schools.
(June 23 2003) Dr Neil Selwyn of the Cardiff University School of Social Sciences headed the evaluation of the BBC/Nuffield prototype courses.
(May 21 2003) On Friday 16 May, the Nuffield Languages Programme and BBC Factual & Learning reported the findings of their joint project:

(April 3 2003) The Nuffield Languages Steering Group has sent an open letter to the acting National Director for languages, setting out a detailed commentary on the National Languages Strategy.
(March 18 2003) A new report has been published by the Nuffield Languages Programme. It examines the far-reaching changes taking place in languages in Higher Education and their implications for schools and colleges.
(February 19 2003) On Wednesday 18 December 2002, the Government, recognising that language competence and intercultural understanding are not optional extras in the 21st century, presented a strategy for languages.
(December 19 2002) The value of language skills is highlighted by the CBI, the Institute of Directors and other influential organisations as the TES of 22 November publishes the results of a survey suggesting that language learning could soon become the preserve of youngsters from the higher socio-economic groups.
(November 22 2002) It has been decided to suspend the languages grant programme until details of the national languages strategy are known.
(November 6 2002) Twelve projects received the prestigious European Award for Languages at a ceremony held at the German Embassy on 26 September. The Steering Group of the Nuffield Languages Programme selected one of the twelve to receive a special cash prize.
(October 2 2002) Sir Trevor McDonald has been presented with the award of Chevalier dans l'Ordre National du Mérite by the Ambassador of France to the UK.

(July 11 2002) The Nuffield Languages Steering Group is concerned that reducing statutory language learning to just three years would have disastrous long-term consequences. They are not alone in their view; other organisations are also expressing their opposition to the proposal.
