The Nuffield Languages Programme aims to take forward the messages of the Languages Inquiry and to translate ideas into action. It is basing its activities on the Inquiry's conclusions in its final report, Languages: the next generation, which has attracted a wide-ranging and extremely positive response both within and outside the UK.

The Programme, which has been allocated £500,000 by the Trustees of the Nuffield Foundation, supports a range of initiatives that help translate the Inquiry's recommendations into policy and practice. It is steered by a committee chaired by Sir Trevor McDonald and Sir Leonard Appleyard (who has recently taken over as Co-Chairman from Sir John Boyd). This Steering Group, which includes several of the original members of the Inquiry as well as new members, aims to work alongside the Languages National Steering Group and key agencies. It is also seeking collaboration with the business world and other potential partners.
